People For the American Way Voters Alliance Endorses Obama

With the conclusion of the presidential primary season, the People For the American Way Voters Alliance today announced its endorsement of presumptive nominee Barack Obama in the 2008 race for President of the United States, and called for progressives to unite in support of his candidacy. President Kathryn Kolbert had the following statement.

"We congratulate Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and their fellow candidates for conducting a spirited campaign of strong ideas and high principles. Both Clinton and Obama made history, and together brought record numbers of voters into the political process.

"People For the American Way Voters Alliance endorses Senator Obama in the general election. Barack Obama can begin to undo the damage that has been done by eight long years of the Bush administration.

“A John McCain presidency would be disastrous for progressives on many fronts, but especially in the nomination of judges to the federal courts and the Supreme Court. McCain is far more conservative than most American realize, thanks to his carefully cultivated image as a ‘maverick.’ But in fact he has pledged the far-right base of his party that he will nominate exactly the same mold of judges that Bush has placed on the courts.

“That could mean the end of fundamental rights and freedoms we take for granted. Reproductive choice. Personal privacy. Freedom from discrimination. The right to our day in court.

"Obama will begin to address the sharp shift to the right that the Bush presidency has brought to our federal courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. Obama will nominate judges who believe in protecting the rights of individual Americans, and preserving the hard-won civil rights and liberties that keep us free.”
